Mere Christianity – C. S. Lewis (1952)
I am not convinced of that. It has been my experience that if you must go hunting for the truth in anything then you are more likely to unravel a series of events that it would be better that you didn’t know.
The definition of TRUTH according to the English Oxford dictionary is … the quality or state of being true or correct in accordance with the facts or reality.
But there is another option … a fact or belief that is accepted as true. (The examples give are … the emergence of scientific truth and the fundamental truth about mankind.
So, if the truth can be something that is simply believed to be true then as long as enough people support that concept then something that is a lie could become actuality, and therefore give false hope or comfort.
The thing that springs to mind is the Nazi movement. Hitler totally believed in the idea of creating a superior race and that he believed it was for the good of all mankind, and that he very successfully convinced others to join the same cause. There were, and are a lot of people that believed, and therefore did his bidding to make it happen. In later years, they took comfort from the fact that they knew that what he said was the truth.
Before and since then there have been others and they all have taken comfort in the fact they believe they know the truth, often having no regrets or remorse for their actions.
