It is all about slowing down, taking time for yourself and establishing new habits that will last a lifetime.
Theme – Releasing with Water
What did it feel like this week to use hand washing as a mindful practice in letting go?
I love the idea behind the Japanese saying … "Let the past drift away in the water."
That idea of washing away your troubles although not a new concept it is one that I think still resonates soundly within today’s society.
The idea of simply washing you hands but in a meaningful way, to breathe in slowly and out again whilst doing it and then visualising any niggling issues disappearing with the water afterwards has a cathartic quality. Even though it may not be a practical long-term solution it does re-focus the mind to promote a much calmer attitude towards tackling the problem.
I have always lived within walking distance of the sea which I loved and would often just pop down to sit and soak up the atmosphere as only the seaside can provide. Even when I moved right in the middle of the UK I still needed my fix so would take myself off to the nearest coast every couple of months to just wander along the shore or sit with a book on the prom. If I went too long between going I found myself increasingly craving a visit. Something totally discombobulated me when I was away from the coast for too long.
Letting the past drift away in water has a whole new meaning for me now.
I not only live by the sea but have the shoreline right outside my study window. Time-out for me is a cup of coffee sitting with the window open listening to the sound of the ocean, smelling the unmistakable waft of salt and listening to the sea birds. There is nothing nicer or more calming regardless of the weather.
Views from my study window.
