The Weight of Glory – C. S. Lewis (1980)
Just because something cannot be seen anymore doesn’t mean that it is not still there.
This is how I feel about people that have died. Commonly referred to as ghosts but to me they are much more, they are spirits that for whatever reason have remained within earthly realms.
Now there has always been a lot of material around regarding a dead person being trapped or unable to pass into the light because there is something that has a hold on them and I am totally unqualified to even make a judgement on that however, I have always harboured the thought that maybe some simply choose to remain of their own volition.
Maybe there are a band of spirits that said no to convention and decided not to move on. For whatever reason, they now walk the earth beside us. They are still the same people that they were, with the same form and laugh but are, like the candle flame in the bright light invisible to mortals.
Could they be responsible for all the quirky things that happen. I’m not talking about major events but the little things that occur to individuals. Certain smells that are associated with a loved one that is no longer alive, a song that is heard unexpectedly could be a subliminal comfort sent when most needed, or even a reminder that the person in question is still around. The sliding-doors moments where jeopardy is averted simply because of a compulsion to act differently, or when good things happen as result of a change, or that certain something that lifts the spirit when it is most needed. This could all be the result of what is called a guardian angel in common terms.
Chances are we will never know, well not in our time as living mortals on earth.
