Mere Christianity – C. S. Lewis (1952)
To be honest I am not sure I know what the correct application is as to the word scruples in this day and age.
The dictionary definition is … (noun) a feeling of doubt or hesitation with regards to the morality or propriety of a course of action … example: She’d no scruples about listening in. Also, (verb) to hesitate or be reluctant to do something that one thinks may be wrong.
This, I have to say does not really help as it would seem that my understanding of respect does not apply to the majority of the young today. They may still apply the same principles but they seem more inclined to celebrate the fact of having no scruples as if it was somehow now a badge of honour.
There is another side, which again although I get the point I cannot condone is that of the idea of having scruples being applied within gangs to uphold the lifestyle and the code of not grassing anyone up. A kind of brotherhood of wrongs, if you like. These people are breaking the law, hurting others and sticking by each other. This has never made any sense to me.
