Because what she wants is smaller and less costly than what has been set before her, she never recognises as gluttony her determination to get what she wants, however troublesome it may be to others.
The Screwtape Letters – C. S. Lewis (1942)
There are some people that are never satisfied, no matter what is done for them, but none the less will testify profusely how they are not bothered about things. They simply cannot see what an effect their supposedly non-fussy attitude has on others.
Example given in the book …
She is always turning from what has been offered … all I want is a cup of tea, weak but not too weak, and the teeniest bit of really crisp toast.
In her mind she is practicing temperance, but what she is asking for is an ideal of something she thinks she remembers and may have never been realised except in her own mind. Thus, she creates more work for people and no matter how hard they try they will never be able to live up to her idealistic expectations.
We, I am sure have all come across people like this … and if you haven’t then thank yourself lucky.
