The pub had seen better times. The make-shift bar and pool area left a lot to be desired. Paint peeled from old sash window frames, floorboards were stained and weathered, the tables and chairs mismatched and ancient. High-ceilings and elaborate cornices hinted at the more lucrative times of past years. The bedrooms faired little better. Uneven floors under carpets well past their sell-by date, ill-fitting curtains that did little to shut out the day and lights that didn’t work. But the beds were amazingly comfortable, the shower steaming hot and the hospitality so warm and welcoming that décor didn’t matter.
