Miracles – C. S. Lewis
Lewis maintains that everything is preordained and that no actions can cause it to be altered. As humans, we tent to believe that we have a say in how our lives pan out. We have the right to make choices about our own lives, but Lewis believes that even those choices have already been planned and while we think we are making decisions we are in fact, whatever decision we make just fulfilling God’s plan.
So, if there is a God and if he has this comprehensive plan then I must come back to the notion of why there is so much in this world that is cruel and hurtful.
Religion would have it that the causes of suffering are the work of the devil, but if that is the case, and (as we have already established) God has a plan then his plan must have already included that. Therefore, if God knew about the devil in the first place and has built his mischief into His plan then surely he could have done something to put a stop to the evil and, if he couldn’t then his whole plan for some revolves around saving the fallen.
To be absolutely honest I am not too sure that I would trust anyone that plans to cause me harm and make me suffer.
