The Problem of Pain – C. S. Lewis (1940)
There are some people that the moment you meet you know you are going to be friends. I’m not sure that this is due to a shared desire though because as with so many other people my true friends are a diverse and eclectic bunch.
The one thing we do all seem to have in common though is a profound sense of humour, and in many the ability to know what the other is thinking, communicating without the need for words. I don’t think I am alone in the fact that although I have many acquaintances, I have very few close friends but those are the ones that fall into the category of picking up exactly where we left off, regardless of the amount of time that has passed between our last meeting.
I am a great believer in the idea that people come and go throughout your life just when you either need them or need to learn something from them, and that is how you also fit into their lives. But sometimes there are those that come in and never leave regardless of how both lives pan out … these are the true ones that as soon as they arrive in your life have already signed their signature on your soul.
