Miracles – C. S. Lewis (1947)
This synopsis was used to illustrate how God would reach down and save the world but, it seems just as fitting as a metaphor for depression.
It is said that you sometimes must reach rock bottom before you can start to climb up again, which unfortunately is often the case but, unless you are very strong willed you also need there to be someone at the bottom to catch you.
Religion would have it that God is there, that he will help you climb up again, to recover, to not get lost but, as I see it even if you do have Gods help you still need other people. People that notice you fall, people that are there for you, people that don’t give-up on you and work with you to start things back on the right road.
That said, those that fall also must want to be caught, want to help themselves, want to survive because will the best will in the world and all the help of all divine entities if the fallen do not want to be helped then, sometimes we have to respect that it is their right to do whatever they wish. Freewill is just that, however much we disagree with the choices made.
