We usually have a house full but due to various things happening we just had one guest … but that didn’t stop us playing cards, drinking and having a laugh.
Trivia about Boxing Day
- When Queen Victoria was on the throne it was a time when the rich box up gifts to give to the poor. Masters gave servants gifts and they got the day off to go home and give Christmas boxes to their families.
- Through the year churches would take money from churchgoers in the form of a collection and hand it out at Christmas. Many stored the money in a box, which they opened on Christmas Day. The money was then handed out to the poor the next day - on Boxing Day.
- Some still leave out extra money for people like paper boys and girls, milkmen and dustmen in the weeks before Christmas, and call it a Christmas box.
- Boxing Day is one of the British bank holidays recognized since 1871.
- On 26th December 1973, William Friedkin’s horror masterpiece “The Exorcist” was released.
