Mere Christianity – C. S. Lewis (1952)
The question is, I suppose how you feel about it … thankful or disappointed?
Technically, as compassionate human beings we should be duty bound to be thankful, but I expect as we are also creatures of passion it will depend not only on the nature of the story but also the perspective of the observer.
This dilemma, I think goes back to debate about forgiving the person and not excusing the crime. When a child murderer or molester is the subject to internal ‘punishment’ form other inmates there would be a lot of people that would feel nothing but joy. However, whatever the crime the perpetrator will still have people that care very deeply for them and therefore, regardless of the crime that they will quite often find just as appalling, they will suffer because of the actions done to their loved-one.
The other side to this is the increasing propaganda these days within the press. The amount of so-called Fake News is making it almost impossible to distinguish between what has actually happened and what is, shall we say is given poetic licence. Then of course there are those that are in the business of scare-mongering and often blatantly avoid anything remotely connected to the truth.
Sometimes, ignorance is bliss … I try hard to avoid all news broadcasts, I do not read newspapers which can mean that I live some of my life cut-off from what is going on around me but it also saves me a lot of unnecessary worrying.
