Miracles – C. S. Lewis (1947)
There are certain things in this life that just are, things that are provable by science but that are invisible to everyday life no matter how important they are to existence. The air that we need to breathe to live cannot seen unless mixed with something else but we all instinctively know it is there because if it wasn’t we wouldn’t be able to survive. Like the sun when obscured by clouds we still know it is right where it should be.
Friends, family, and the ones we hold most dear in our lives are often held under the same principle, even those that are no longer within the mortal realm. We know there are there even when they are far away and we do not see them, we feel their love, we share their pain and rejoice in the joys of their lives just as much as we do in our own. We also feel the loss for those that have passed.
Christmas is a magical time, I love the present buying, the sending and receiving of cards, the decorations, the food, the adornments on the houses and in the streets, the dressing-up, the games and all the festive fun, so it just doesn’t seem fair to have to be ordering funeral flowers.
So far in less than a week we have lost two very good friends. My heart goes out to those that have the task of making all the arrangements, but most of all it breaks for them because from now on this very festive time of year will always be tinged with sadness.
