THE QUEEN’S LEGACY
To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee
Come take a stroll through time with me
In 1926 a baby graced the royal scene
A little girl never destined to be queen
But when Uncle Edward, abdicated the throne
Elizabeth found Buckingham Palace as her new home
In 1936 Dear PaPa became king
Elevating her to become a queen-in-waiting
At 21 she walked the aisle of St Paul
But it wasn’t long before she got the call
George VI reign had ended in 1952
And that death was to herald for her a life anew
Long live the Queen the world would proclaim
And her days would never now be the same
The carefree role of wife and mother
Was surpassed by a life-long devotion akin to no other
State visits and receptions became the norm
She turned greeting her public into a new artform
Impromptu walkabouts to get close to the crowd
Was once a protocol never allowed
But she delighted in the love and admiration
Afforded her by not just this nation
Around the world with every country she toured
Her popularity became more assured
25 years marked a Silver Jubilee
With celebrations to coincide with her official birthday
Street parties and bunting adorned the lands
Carnivals paraded with marching bands
The next big milestone
Was 40 years on the throne
A quiet affair with no official celebrations
No national adornment or decorations
But all that changed when the golden 50 years was reached
The kingdom was beseeched
To mark the prestigious days
With international recognition in many ways
The Proms at the Palace enthralled all in classical styles
While the millions watching the pop party stretched down the mall for miles
And so heralded the next ten years
Conflicts, crisis, disruption, and fears
The Diamond jubilee marred by restrictions to cost
National austerity saw an opportunity lost
To reunite a country nationwide
And for a short time put all troubles aside
Controversial divorces, wedding and births also mark this time
William weds Kate and succeeds in securing the blood-line
The heir apparent to the sovereignty
Charles marries Camilla amidst widespread controversy
And so back to the Platinum Jubilee of 70 years supreme
The likes of which has never been seen
A feat of loyalty that my never come again
God Bless you your majesty – and long may you continue to reign.
